<image:caption>Whether your child has autism or is learning alongside peers who do, small, everyday moments can shape how they see and treat others. Start with simple conversations: “Everyone’s brain works a little differently—and that’s a good thing.” You can explain it like this: “Different brains help people be good at different things. Some people are great at noticing details, some are amazing problem-solvers, and some are really creative or kind friends. The world needs all kinds of thinkers.” When children understand that differences in communication, play, or behavior are part of what makes each person unique, it builds empathy early on. These conversations can decrease bullying and promote an environment where all children feel included and important.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Is Your Child a Sensory Seeker or Sensory Avoider? - Individuals who have a high threshold are referred to as sensory seekers. These individuals are under-sensitive to sensory input. In other words, they require more input to tell their system that they are “regulated” and ready to go about their daily tasks. A few of the many actions that could be seen with sensory seekers are clapping, blowing raspberries, chewing on edible/non-edible items, spinning, rolling, swinging, and jumping. It is important to ensure that sensory seekers obtain sensations to satisfy their needs in a safe and appropriate way.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Is Your Child a Sensory Seeker or Sensory Avoider? - Conversely, children who have very low sensory thresholds are referred to as sensory avoiders. Sensory avoiders are oversensitive to sensory input. They can quickly become overwhelmed when a significant amount of sensory input is provided and can shut down. Many individuals who are sensory avoiders steer clear of the input that overwhelms them.</image:title>

<image:caption>Have your child lie on their back with their legs straight. Have them kick one leg up to a 90-degree angle. Support at the top of their thigh with one hand, then gently push at the back of their ankle in an attempt to straighten their leg. Hold for 30-60 seconds as tolerated on each leg. Your child should feel a “pulling” feeling in their hamstring muscle at the back of their thigh.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 7 Strategies to Practice Stair Climbing with Your Child - Start with a curb or low stepping stool.</image:title>
<image:caption>Start with only one step - one at a lower height than a normal step. This can be a great way for your child to gain strength, balance, body awareness, and confidence for a bigger flight of stairs. Curbs and toddler step stools are usually a great place to begin. Start with letting them hold one or both of your hands and gradually work toward reducing your level of assistance.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5dbb29784dffb44966ed0bb4/c98cdc4f-a294-442a-8ab2-5bf450cbba33/2.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - 7 Strategies to Practice Stair Climbing with Your Child - 2. Practice stepping over an obstacle.</image:title>
<image:caption>Stepping over a low obstacle is a great way to mimic the skill of stair climbing without the added challenge of having to get on/off an actual step. You can use a foam pool noodle, a rolled up blanket/towel, or even a rope tied between two chairs (about 1-2 inches off the ground). Let your child hold your hand until they get the hang of it and then encourage them to step over independently. Practice with either leg leading and gradually increase the height of the obstacle if possible.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5dbb29784dffb44966ed0bb4/906559c8-9264-4d4c-8036-398feebc93ae/3.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - 7 Strategies to Practice Stair Climbing with Your Child - 3. Practice balancing on one foot.</image:title>
<image:caption>When a child walks up or down the stairs, they have to be able to balance on one leg in order to bring the opposite leg to the next step. A few ways to try single leg balance include: help your child balance their foot on a small ball or step stool for a few seconds, pretend to stomp like a dinosaur with exaggerated pauses between steps, or pop bubbles with their toes.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5dbb29784dffb44966ed0bb4/77021271-a444-4d80-be39-a2c8ea09c7f8/6.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - 7 Strategies to Practice Stair Climbing with Your Child - 4. Master going up before going down.</image:title>
<image:caption>Most children will master going up the stairs without help before coming down. While going up does require some ability to balance on one foot, it is mostly a skill of leg strength. Going down the steps requires a higher level of balance, muscle control, and even body/spatial awareness. There is also more room for error when coming down — it is easier to recover from a misstep when going up then when coming down. So always focus on mastering the going up part before forcing the coming down part. You can also teach your child to come down the stairs sideways with two hands on the wall/railing to increase their stability.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5dbb29784dffb44966ed0bb4/7c0a30f9-f242-464f-ad2f-d647b3917594/1.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - 7 Strategies to Practice Stair Climbing with Your Child - 5. Add a visual cue.</image:title>
<image:caption>If your child seems to have difficulty judging the height or depth of the steps, try adding a visual cue like brightly colored tape at the edge of the step. You can also place colored spots or stickers in the middle of each step so they know where to place their foot. If your child seems to strongly prefer using one leg to go up or down the steps, try placing a sticker on top of the non-preferred foot to encourage them to use that leg. For example, if your child only goes up the step using their right leg, place a Mickey sticker on the left foot and provide the verbal cue of “step up with Mickey”.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5dbb29784dffb44966ed0bb4/14cc925f-1e03-46c7-8a76-24d312676037/7.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - 7 Strategies to Practice Stair Climbing with Your Child - 6. Try steps at the playground or park.</image:title>
<image:caption>Steps within a playground structure are often a smaller height than steps in a home because they are designed with smaller bodies in mind. Furthermore, the stairs at the playground are often significantly more motivating than stairs at home because there is usually a slide or a tunnel waiting at the top! You can also take advantage of practicing going up/down any curbs or other steps you might find at a playground or a park (or really anywhere you might be when out in the community!) Practicing a variety of steps with different heights, depths, number of steps, and types of railings is a great way to improve your child’s strength and confidence with stairs.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog - 7 Strategies to Practice Stair Climbing with Your Child - 7. Above all, make it fun!</image:title>
<image:caption>Try to keep stair practice at home as enjoyable as possible so that your child does not view it as “work”. You can place puzzle pieces at the bottom of the step and carry each piece one by one to the puzzle board at the top of the steps. Try using a matching game with the pairs split between the top and bottom of the stairs. You can even use food motivators like candy or gummies that are “hidden” every few steps. Be creative and change it up so that your child does not get bored!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What Do I Do After My Child Gets A Diagnosis? - 2. Tune into your feelings and trust your instincts</image:title>
<image:caption>Acknowledge how you are truly feeling during this process. It is overwhelming to go through any diagnostic process, but even more so when it involves your child. Find a way to truly connect with your feelings - maybe journaling, meditation, or prayer.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What Do I Do After My Child Gets A Diagnosis? - 3. Allow yourself to grieve</image:title>
<image:caption>Know that it is okay to feel sad and grieve this diagnosis. Give yourself space to grieve alone and with your spouse, but try to separate it from your time with the child(ren).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What Do I Do After My Child Gets A Diagnosis? - 4. Advocate</image:title>
<image:caption>As parents, we have an innate response to advocate for our children. However, when you have a child with a medical diagnosis you have to be willing to advocate on a larger scale. You may be advocating for educational supports & medical services.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What Do I Do After My Child Gets A Diagnosis? - 5. Connect with therapists that are good for you and your child</image:title>
<image:caption>Your pediatrician or diagnosing physician will likely recommend therapy for your child, if he or she is not already receiving services. Do your own research on where would be the best fit for your family. Consider location, wait list, reviews from others, and don’t be afraid to switch therapy centers if you try a place that ends up not being a good fit for your family.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Your child is going to make progress at his or her own pace and that is something to be celebrated! Although it’s easy to focus on the big milestones, be sure to celebrate the same ones as well. Each step, big and small, is progress worth cheering over.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What Do I Do After My Child Gets A Diagnosis? - 9. Be excited for what your child is excited about</image:title>
<image:caption>Most children have a specific interest or topic they enjoy - be it cars, elephants, cardboard boxes, elevators, or Mickey Mouse. Tune into what is most interesting to your child and get equally excited about it. This is the most effective way to build connection with your child - sharing joy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What Do I Do After My Child Gets A Diagnosis? - 10. Take time to process the diagnosis and share when you’re ready</image:title>
<image:caption>You will receive a lot of information after a diagnosis of any kind. Give yourself time to really accept the diagnosis before feeling obligated to share the diagnosis with others. If you choose to do so. Do you feel like your child gets tired more easily or loses their balance more often than other children when participating in physical activities? Has it been a challenge for your child to learn new motor skills, like crawling, jumping, throwing a ball, or even holding a crayon?</image:caption>

<image:caption>Have your child lie on their back with their legs up in the air. Place a stuffed animal between their feet and have them attempt to reach up and grab it with their hands. Repeat as able. Modification: Have your child focus only on holding the stuffed animal between their feet for a few seconds; increase time as able.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 7 Core Strengthening Exercises for Children - #2 BRIDGE</image:title>
<image:caption>Have your child lie on their back with their knees bent and feet planted on the floor. Have them squeeze their bottom and lift it up into the air. Hold for 2-3 seconds and repeat as able. Try driving a toy car under their bottom to make it more fun. Modification: Have your child focus only on squeezing their bottom without lifting it into the air. You can also hold their hips and help them lift their bottom only an inch off the ground and work toward lifting it all the way up.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>

<image:title>Blog - 7 Core Strengthening Exercises for Children - #3 SUPERMAN/SUPERWOMAN</image:title>
<image:caption>Have your child lie on their belly on the floor. Encourage them to fly like superman by lifting their head, arms, and legs off the floor for 3-5 seconds. Repeat as able. Make it more fun by having a competition with a parent/sibling OR have them reach for a stuffed animal. You can also try this on a large platform swing or exercise ball. Modification: Place a pillow under your child’s chest and focus on lifting only the head and arms a few inches off the ground first. Add in leg lift as able. Hold for only 1 second to start and increase hold time as able.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog - 7 Core Strengthening Exercises for Children - #4 TALL KNEELING</image:title>
<image:caption>Have your child kneel on the floor with their bottom lifted off their feet. Their hips, knees, and shoulders should be in line. Have them throw a ball or stuffed animal overhead to you or another target (i.e., block tower or bucket) without losing their balance. Repeat as able. Modification: Focus on just holding this tall kneeling position with a ball or stuffed animal above their head---see if they can beat their time with every repetition. If this is still too hard, have them hold the tall kneeling position at the coffee table while they work on a puzzle so that they can lean on the support surface as needed.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5dbb29784dffb44966ed0bb4/1611931780210-ZDQ5MIA48QVWDCG94UEC/animalwalk.JPG</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - 7 Core Strengthening Exercises for Children - #5 ANIMAL WALKS</image:title>
<image:caption>Practice crawling like a bear (pictured), crab walking, or crawling on hands and knees like a dog across the living room floor. You can make this more fun by having your child complete a puzzle doing animal walks---place the puzzle pieces on one side of the room with the puzzle board on the opposite side of the room. Modification: Decrease the distance they have to travel OR just focus on holding the position without moving across the room. If bear crawling or crab walking are too challenging, focus just on a simple hands and knees crawling motion. Try to make a tunnel with your legs or with chairs and blankets to make it more motivating.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5dbb29784dffb44966ed0bb4/1611932355682-U9NR3LVBHYW3ZAF3Q6PF/wheelbarrow.JPG</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - 7 Core Strengthening Exercises for Children - #6 WHEELBARROW</image:title>
<image:caption>Hold your child’s feet and have them “wheelbarrow walk” across the room on their hands. You can include the whole family and have races OR have your child complete a puzzle in this position (as mentioned above with animal walks). Modification: Focus just on a crawling motion if the wheelbarrow position is too challenging. You will also want to start with just a crawling position if you notice your child’s elbows hyperextending (bending in the “wrong” direction) in a wheelbarrow position.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog - 7 Core Strengthening Exercises for Children - #7 SQUATS</image:title>
<image:caption>Place puzzle pieces on the floor and have your child squat down to pick them up. Encourage them to bend at their hips and knees with their toes pointed straight ahead. Their back should not be rounded. Repeat as able. Modification: If your child tends to just bend at the waist or round their back, have them practice sitting down and then standing back up from a low chair/stool.</image:caption>

<image:caption>NEVER bring a sick child to therapy! If your child has had a fever, diarrhea, or vomiting in the past 24 hours, please call and cancel your session. If your child has been diagnosed with an illness that is contagious, please call to cancel your session. We will work with you on rescheduling and this will not be billed to you as a “late cancel” or “no show.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Health and Cleaning Procedures - CLEANING PROCEDURES</image:title>
<image:caption>All hard surfaces in the clinic area will be wiped down between sessions. Again, we were doing this to protect you all along! But we now need to consider the bathroom, door, furniture, toys, and other therapy materials. Please be patient with us if we start a little late or end a little early to make this happen! In addition to our cleaning between sessions, the clinic will be professionally cleaned and sanitized every week.</image:caption>

<image:title>Health and Cleaning Procedures - HAND WASHING</image:title>
<image:caption>We already start all sessions with handwashing so this won’t be new! However, it is preferred that the child and therapist use the sink to wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. Hand sanitizing wipes will be available if your child has difficulty with soap and water handwashing. Parents should also wash their hands.</image:caption>
