Turn Summer Reading Into an Adventure
KTL has some tips to turn reading into play this summer! If summer reading feels like a chore, don’t sweat it—learning can happen through fun, everyday moments.
Make Reading Feel Like Play
Instead of asking, “Did you understand the story?” try turning reading into a conversation.
While reading together:
Predict what might happen next
Use silly voices for characters
Let your child “be the teacher” and ask you questions
Pause and say, “Wait…what just happened?!”
Act out favorite scenes together
These simple interactions build comprehension skills while keeping reading engaging and low-pressure.
Bring Stories to Life
Kids understand and remember stories better when they can picture them in their minds.
Try asking:
“What do you think this place looks like?”
“How would this character sound?”
“Would you want to be friends with them?”
“What would YOU do in this situation?”
Suddenly, reading becomes more than words on a page—it becomes an experience.
Comprehension Practice Doesn’t Have to Happen at a Desk
Some of the best reading discussions happen:
During popsicle breaks
At the pool
On road trips
In blanket forts
Right before bedtime
And remember—comprehension isn’t only about books. Following recipes, playing games, building Lego sets, and listening to audiobooks all help children strengthen language and understanding skills.
